This is an incredibly well done app, and I would have paid far more than US$1.99 for it. BetterSnapTool (US$1.99) – Elegantly snaps windows to a quarter, half, or maximized screen on the desktop (or custom sizes/layouts, using the cursor, keyboard shortcuts, or by overloading OS X’s native window control buttons. But most are things I’ve purchased since I bought my 13″ Retina MBP. Some of these (Pages, and Office for Mac 2011) I’ve owned for a while. I’ve found quite a few tools over the past few weeks that have made working on the Mac an enjoyable experience. For this, full-screen doesn’t work, but something like Windows 7 Snap is ideal. ![]() More importantly, when working on a project, I often need two or more windows open at once. Meaning if you shift to Focus mode, gestures don’t work as well as they could, since Word is on the desktop. Word has Focus mode (its own full-screen model) and now supports OS X’s full-screen mode – but not together. It isn’t always easy, as certain apps (looking at you, Word 2011), don’t optimally use full-screen. ![]() By and large, I’ve shifted to using my Mac with most apps in full-screen, and really making the most of the gestures included in OS X 10.8. You can quickly return to “work” layout immediately by pressing a quick short cut or a menu button.īoth apps are great but I love BetterSnap’s customization options.A few weeks ago I wrote about gestures on the Mac vs. You take a break and opened email or browser and now your windows is disorganized. For example, you can set up a “work” layout with 3 windows for your most used apps. Moom has a cool feature to save your windows layout. The grid system can be turned off, so it is not a big issue. I tried out Moom and it was nice as well, but I think the grid system is a distraction. I use a 22 inch monitor, but if I have a bigger monitor I will create more snap areas to optimize my desktop space. You can set the size, color, text prompt, visual prompt. The snap area prompt can be customized to your liking. I created a specific snap area for OmniFocus because the default 50% snap area is too small to display all the information that I need. The snap area can be set up as a universal snap area that applies to all applications or for a specification application. The standout feature from this app is the ability to create your own snap area. I assigned holding to move and to resize.) (Meaning, I don't use the window's top bar for moving or its corners for resizing because it's less efficient and I'm out of the habit now. It's actually become my default way to move or resize my windows. This is incredibly helpful when wanting to move or resize windows that are behind other windows. Besides being able to place windows exactly where I want them with a simple keyboard shortcut (or Drag Areas which I don't use), this app has a couple other features that are actually the most valuable to me: moving and resizing windows by simply holding modifyer key(s) and placing the cursor over any part of the window, whether the window is active or not. (And if I were to use Snap Areas, I can customize the look of them which is nice.) This app is incredibly useful for me for both software development and day-to-day use. Once you've set it up, it feels like it's just native OS behavior. For my use, BetterSnapTool is invisible and just works in the background to perform actions when I use certain modifyer keys and keyboard shortcuts. I think this is one of the best apps that you can get for just a few dollars. select what happens when right-clicking any of the red/orange/green window buttons of any windowīetterSnapTool is very customizable and will change the way you work with your Mac!īetterSnapTool works with almost every application, only some apps with non-standard windows can't be supported.select what happens when double-clicking a window's titlebar.move or resize the window below the cursor while holding customizable modifier keys.always accessible pop up menu showing all possible snap sizes / positions.customizable keyboard shortcuts to trigger any snap area. These can resize & move windows to any possible position. This enables you to easily maximize your windows, position them side by side or even resize them to quarters of the screen. BetterSnapTool allows you to easily manage your window positions and sizes by either dragging them to one of the screen's corners or to the top, left or right side of the screen. ![]()
